Discussion forum

While there is no requirement to discuss improvements prior to submitting a proposal, this is where the community discusses and debates ideas.

Snapshot vote

All off-chain voting occurs on the Origin Protocol Snapshot space. This allows for signaling votes and temperature checks to be conducted without participants needing to spend gas. Other proposals belong on Snapshot because they don’t require on-chain execution.

Participation requirements

  • 5,000 xOGN to create a Snapshot proposal
  • No minimum to vote on existing proposals
  • 5 million xOGN quorum requirement

On-chain implementation

All configuration changes and improvements to the protocol’s smart contracts must be executed on-chain. All on-chain proposals are reviewed for security risks. A 48-hour timelock provides additional security, preventing changes from taking effect immediately after an on-chain vote is passed.

Participation requirements

  • 100,000 xOGN to create an on-chain proposal
  • No minimum to vote on existing proposals
  • 20% of xOGN supply quorum requirement

01  Buy OGN

OGN can be purchased from many of the top AMMs or exchanges including:

AMMs

Curve

Exchanges

You can also purchase OGN directly on the Origin DApp:Buy OGN

Unsure how much OGN you need to create proposals?

Use the calculator below to see how much staked OGN is needed for creating both on and off chain proposals, dependent on the time staked.

02  Stake OGN

With your OGN in a Web3 wallet (e.g. Metamask), connect to the OGN staking page.

Select the amount of OGN you wish to stake and your desired duration. A longer lock-up will maximize your voting power and your share of the variable staking rewards.

03  Discuss a proposal

Create a new post summarizing your proposal in our governance forum or join an existing discussion.

There should be a forum post representing each proposal that exists on Snapshot or the governance portal. There's no harm in getting a signal and starting the conversation.

04  Submit a proposal

Create a non-binding proposal on Snapshot or a binding, on-chain proposal when you're ready for an up/down vote.

You will need to connect the Web3 wallet containing your xOGN (staked OGN) to verify eligibility and determine your voting power.

Off-chain proposals are great for temperature checks and signaling votes since they are gasless. Snapshot also supports several different voting systems with innovative ways to calculate the outcome of a proposal.

On-chain proposals are submitted directly to the governance contracts in the form of executable code. This requires some technical knowledge and is usually preceded by a Snapshot vote and forum discussion.

05  Vote on a proposal

Influence the future of the protocol by casting your vote.

Voting power is determined by the number of xOGN (staked OGN) in your Web3 wallet. It's free to vote on Snapshot proposals and there is no minimum amount required.

On-chain votes require Ethereum gas to be recorded on the blockchain. Once an on-chain proposal is approved, 48 hours must pass before the proposal can be executed. This would give everyone a chance to take action if a malicious proposal were to get through.
